More than 30 popular beaches in Sydney’s northern suburbs have been closed after a series of shark attacks, disrupting peak tourist movement along the city’s coastline. According to a Bloomberg report, all beaches in the Northern Beaches area were shut after a shark attack at Manly Beach on Monday evening, police said.

Authorities said a man believed to be in his 20s is in critical condition after being bitten at Manly Beach, a location frequented by both international visitors and local tourists, as per the Bloomberg report. In a separate incident the same day at nearby Dee Why, a young surfer escaped unhurt after a shark bit his surfboard, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Another incident was reported further north on Tuesday, where a 39-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries, the ABC said. On Sunday, a 12-year-old boy was left in critical condition after a shark bite at a Sydney Harbour beach, adding to concerns for beachgoers during the holiday season.

Australia draws travellers with beaches, cities, and wildlife. But not every place is open to visitors. Some locations remain off limits due to safety risks, conservation rules, military use, or Indigenous cultural protection. From remote islands to secret defence bases, these restricted zones show another side of the country that tourists can only read about, not enter.

Heard Island sits in the southern Indian Ocean, about halfway between Australia and South Africa. It is one of Australia’s most remote territories. The island has glaciers, an active volcano called Big Ben, and wildlife such as seals, penguins, and endemic birds.

Access is strictly controlled to prevent invasive species. Along with the McDonald Islands, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Only scientific expeditions are usually allowed, and reaching it requires a two-week sea journey through rough waters.

Beach closures disrupt travel plans

The temporary closures affect several well-known beaches that attract swimmers, surfers, and tourists year-round. Officials have advised visitors to follow local safety alerts and avoid restricted coastal areas until further notice.

Explaining the recent cluster of incidents, University of Sydney shark and public policy expert Christopher Pepin-Neff said environmental conditions played a role after heavy weekend rain. “We see bait fish that are attracted to the sewage and bull sharks that are attracted to the bait fish, and that creates a very bad scenario,” Pepin-Neff said, Bloomberg reported.
