Singapore will limit passengers to carrying only two power banks when flying out of the country, starting April 15, to reduce fire risks linked to lithium batteries, according to a statement from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore on Monday.

Passengers who carry more than the allowed number will have to discard the extra devices before departure. According to a Bloomberg report, the authority also said that power banks must not be charged during flights and advised travellers not to use them to charge personal devices while on board.

Airlines ban usage, Japan moves to tighten power bank rules

The move follows similar restrictions introduced in Hong Kong and aligns with guidelines issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization, amid growing concerns over fire hazards caused by defective lithium battery devices.

Several airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Qantas Airways, have already banned the use of power banks during flights as part of safety measures.

Japan is set to ban the use of power banks on passenger flights from April 2026, according to its transport ministry, as part of stricter aviation safety measures.

Under the new rules, passengers will not be allowed to use or charge power banks during flights, and the number of devices allowed onboard will also be restricted. The decision comes amid rising concerns over lithium-ion battery-related fire incidents on aircraft.
