Portugal dispels Schengen Area suspension fear with new border control systems

Recent concerns about Portugal's potential suspension from the Schengen Area have been alleviated following a joint statement from the Portuguese government and the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF), Portugal's borders and immigration agency. This announcement comes after Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, hinted at a possible suspension two weeks ago.
According to reports, the European Commission has affirmed its commitment to collaborating with all member states, including Portugal, to facilitate the implementation of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This statement effectively dispels the earlier suspension concerns.
The SEF cnfirmed that Portugal is diligently working to meet the deadlines for the new border control systems. Tests and preparations are underway for the EES launch in October 2024, with ETIAS set to follow six months later. In April, the SEF highlighted the importance of meeting these deadlines to avoid jeopardizing Portugal's full participation in the Schengen Area. To ensure progress, the previous government authorized an additional €25 million in February. This funding, along with ongoing collaboration between the SEF and the current government, has kept Portugal on track.
Timely implementation of the EES and ETIAS is critical for preserving the free movement of people within the Schengen Area. Failure to meet the deadlines could lead to the reintroduction of internal border controls in Portugal, causing additional checks at other European borders for travelers to and from Portugal.
