Greece’s timeless charm, its ancient ruins, turquoise seas, and whitewashed islands, draws travellers throughout the year. But the ideal time to visit depends on what kind of trip one is seeking. From lively summers to quiet coastal escapes, each season in Greece offers a distinct experience.

Peak tourist season
The peak tourist season runs from June to September, when sunshine is abundant and rain is scarce, as per Conde Nast Traveller. Travellers can expect long beach days and open-air festivals across the islands. However, the magazine notes that recent heatwaves have pushed temperatures beyond 110°F (43°C), prompting temporary closures of sites such as the Acropolis during afternoons.

Spring and Autumn offer balance
For visitors who prefer fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons, April to June and September to October, are ideal. Spring brings cooler sea temperatures but comfortable weather for sightseeing, while autumn offers mild conditions and thinner crowds as the tourist rush fades. Central Greece even experiences colourful fall foliage during this period.

Winter marks the off season
Between November and March, Greece enters its quietest period. Temperatures drop to between 44°F and 68°F, and rainfall peaks in December and January. Many island resorts and beachside establishments close, but historic sites on the mainland remain accessible. Accommodation and flight prices also fall sharply, making it the most affordable time to visit.

How long to stay
Travelers should plan at least a week to explore key attractions, including Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. Larger islands like Crete require additional days, while lesser-known islands may need four to five extra days to explore fully.

Visa requirements for Indian travellers
Indian passport holders must obtain a Schengen visa to visit Greece. The short-stay Schengen visa allows travel for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or family visits. Applicants need to submit their visa applications to the Greek consulate or an accredited visa center, providing travel itineraries, hotel bookings, proof of funds, and travel insurance covering the entire Schengen area.
