Having a valid visa and an unexpired passport may not be enough for hassle-free international travel. Airlines and immigration officials in the UAE and abroad are increasingly strict about the physical condition of passports, with even minor damage leading to denied boarding or refusal of entry. Authorities say frayed corners, water stains, torn pages, or scratched data chips can raise doubts about a passport’s authenticity.

Airlines departing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah carry the responsibility of ensuring passengers meet entry rules at their destinations, according to a report by Gulf News. If a passport appears damaged, they may stop travellers from boarding flights regardless of visa validity.

Countries such as the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, the United States and Australia are known for applying tough checks. In Indonesia, a one-centimetre tear can block entry, while in the US, a faulty chip may invalidate the document.

As per the Gulf News report, officials classify passports as either partially or severely damaged. Even in partial cases, where details remain clear, travellers risk rejection. Renewal is advised at the first sign of wear.

To avoid disruption, travellers are always reminded to keep passports dry, use protective covers, and avoid folding or inserting papers inside.
