New Zealand family visa application to move to enhanced online system from November 16

New Zealand is set to move applications for certain temporary entry visas filed by family members of New Zealand citizens or residents to its enhanced Immigration Online system from November 16, 2026.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said the enhanced Immigration Online system will become the preferred platform for these applications after November 16. The move is part of its effort to create a simpler and more user-friendly immigration service.

Visa categories affected

The transition will cover Visitor visas which includes Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visa and Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa, Work visa which includes Partner of a New Zealander Work Visa and Student visa – Child of a New Zealander Student Visa.

INZ first introduced the enhanced Immigration Online system in 2021 and has progressively moved visa applications onto the platform. The system already supports several major visa categories. INZ said the latest transition is intended to make it easier for applicants to understand requirements, submit documents and track their applications.

New features for applicants

The new application process will use a dynamic form that asks questions based on an applicant's circumstances. It will also provide guidance on the information and supporting evidence required.

Applicants will be able to upload a digital scan of their passport. Relevant passport information will then be automatically populated in the application form.

INZ said this will reduce manual data entry, improve the accuracy of information and lower the risk of errors in passport details.

The immigration authority said it has worked with immigration professionals while redesigning the end-to-end application process.

The changes are aimed at reducing waiting times, improving communication on application status and increasing self-service options for applicants.

The updated instructions will also allow children who qualify for domestic student status to apply for a Child of New Zealander Student Visa.

Other changes will clarify health requirements for medical certificates and the duration of partnership visas for couples who have lived together for less than 12 months. Some residence applications may also be deferred when the outcome of court proceedings could affect the eligibility of a supporting partner.
