Iran has scrapped visa requirements for citizens of India. The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has approved the abolition of visas for citizens of India, effective from 4th February 2024. However, this newfound freedom comes with certain conditions.

Individuals holding ordinary passports will now be permitted to enter Iran without a visa, but there are restrictions. This privilege is applicable once every six months, and the maximum stay is limited to 15 days. The 15-day period cannot be extended under this new regulation.

The visa abolition is exclusively applicable to individuals entering Iran for tourism. If Indian nationals plan to stay for a longer duration, make multiple entries within a six-month period, or require other types of visas, they must obtain the necessary visas through the respective representations of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs, so far India only held visa-exemption arrangements with Iran for diplomats. Over the past few months, India has been added to the visa-exemption lists of many countries, including Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Kenya was the latest country to announce that it would abolish visa requirements for all travellers, regardless of their home country.
