India’s passport has climbed to the 75th position in the latest Henley Passport Index, improving from 85th last year, according to the index. The rise means Indian passport holders can now travel to 56 countries without obtaining a visa in advance, either through visa-free or visa-on-arrival access.

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without a prior visa. A higher rank reflects stronger global mobility and easier international travel for citizens.

The latest ranking shows a recovery for India after recent declines. In 2024, India stood at 80th place and later slipped to 85th, indicating reduced travel access at the time. Although the current improvement marks progress, India has not yet reached its highest position. The country’s best-ever ranking was 71st in 2006.

At the top of the index, Singapore holds the first position. Its passport offers visa-free access to 192 destinations. Japan and South Korea share the second spot, with access to 187 countries each.

Sweden and the United Arab Emirates rank third, allowing entry to 186 destinations. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland are placed fourth, with visa-free access to 185 countries. Austria, Greece, Malta and Portugal follow at fifth position, with access to 184 destinations.
