Extensions for short-stay Schengen visas are allowed under the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009, dated 13 July 2009, which establishes the Community Code on Visas (EU Journal of Laws 2009 L243/1). These guidelines specify that your visa can be extended due to unexpected situations beyond your control (usually including, for example, a medical condition, a strong personal reason, unexpected natural disasters, etc.)

Here are all the reasons why you can extend your Schengen visa.

Can I Extend My Schengen Visa?

You can extend your Schengen visa if your current visa has not yet expired, you have not yet spent 90 days within a 180-day period in the Schengen Area, and you meet the requirements for one of the following conditions:

Late Entry

This reason for extension of stay applies primarily to individuals holding single-entry short-stay visas. It represents one of the most favourable scenarios for extending your visa. Specifically, if you entered the Schengen Area after your visa’s validity commencement date, you may be eligible for an extension.

Humanitarian Reasons

The Schengen visa policy has made it possible to extend a short-stay Schengen visa in order to prevent or overcome hardship for third-country nationals. A visa extension based on humanitarian reasons is possible in the following situations:

  • Medical treatment. If you require ongoing medical treatment, such as surgeries or therapies, you can seek a humanitarian extension.
  • Family emergency. Extensions are possible for critical family emergencies, like illness, injury, or death, allowing you to provide support or make necessary arrangements.

Force Majeure

Force majeure refers to unforeseen and exceptional circumstances beyond your control that can justify an extension of your Schengen visa. These circumstances can disrupt your original travel plans and make it impossible for you to leave the Schengen Area within the initially authorized period. Force majeure events can include:
  • Natural disasters. Events such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, or severe storms that make it dangerous or impossible to travel.
  • Civil unrest and political conflicts. Protests, civil disturbances, or sudden political instability that pose a threat to your safety.
  • War and armed conflict. Outbreaks of war or armed conflict in your home country or region.
  • Terrorist attacks. Terrorist incidents or threats that disrupt travel plans.
  • Epidemics and pandemics. Health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic that lead to travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, or the unavailability of flights.
  • Medical emergencies. Sudden and severe medical conditions or accidents that require ongoing treatment within the Schengen Area.
  • Personal emergencies. Events such as the death of a family member or serious personal crises that necessitate an extension.

Professional Obligations

Schengen visa extensions for professional reasons are granted when individuals need to extend their stay in the Schengen Area due to work-related commitments or opportunities. These extensions are typically based on legitimate, documented professional purposes that require additional time in the Schengen Zone. Visa extensions due to professional obligations are possible for the following reasons:

  • Business meetings and conferences.
  • Employment or work assignments.
  • Training or internship programs.
  • Research or academic activities.
  • Investment and business start-ups.
  • Cultural and artistic performances, etc.

Personal Reasons:

A Schengen visa can also be extended if you have strong personal reasons for the extension. For example, reasons like family emergencies, illness, injury, or, in the worst-case scenario, death.

Personal reasons also include personal celebrations such as weddings, childbirth, or legal proceedings in one of the Schengen countries.

Authorities consider the severity and validity of these personal reasons when evaluating the requests, and they make the final decision on whether to grant an extension.
