Indonesia may soon change the way foreign tourists enter Bali, as officials discuss stricter immigration checks aimed at improving the quality of visitors. According to reports, regional authorities are considering a proposal that could require international travellers to submit a three-month bank statement. The move is meant to ensure visitors have enough funds, reduce visa misuse, and address concerns linked to low-spending tourism and illegal activities.

The proposal focuses on adding financial checks either during the visa application process or at arrival points such as airports. Under the plan, tourists may need to show a record of their bank balance for the past three months. Officials believe this will help confirm that visitors can pay for their stay and will not seek illegal work or overstay their visas.

The idea is part of a broader push by the Bali government to shift away from mass tourism and move toward a model based on quality and sustainability. Local authorities have raised concerns that some visitors contribute little to the economy while increasing pressure on public services. By screening financial stability, the government hopes to attract tourists who spend more and follow local rules.

Immigration officials say visa misuse remains a serious issue in Bali. Cases of foreigners running businesses or working without permits have been reported in recent years. Authorities believe that checking bank statements can help identify visitors who are less likely to engage in such activities, reducing enforcement pressure and protecting local jobs.

The proposal has been recommended by the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Officials say the plan would bring Bali closer to international visa standards followed by many countries. Discussions are ongoing on how this requirement could fit into existing systems such as the electronic visa-on-arrival and other visa categories.

The possible impact on tourism numbers has raised concern among industry players. Some fear that additional paperwork could discourage travellers, especially budget tourists or short-notice visitors. However, officials argue that fewer visitors with higher spending could bring better outcomes for local communities and infrastructure.

The proposal also reflects a wider global trend, where many countries already demand proof of funds from visitors. The use of a three-month bank history is intended to show consistent financial capacity rather than a one-time deposit.

If approved, the policy would require digital systems to manage document checks. Authorities are likely to use online portals for bank statement uploads and train airport staff to avoid delays for passengers.

For now, the proposal remains under discussion. Travellers planning trips to Bali are advised to follow official updates from Indonesian authorities, as the government weighs changes aimed at shaping a more controlled and sustainable tourism future.
