Applicants are advised to check the document requirements before submitting their application, as missing or incorrect documents can lead to delays or visa rejection.
Basic documents required
Most Germany visa applicants are required to submit:
- Completed visa application form
- Valid passport
- Two passport-size photographs
- Proof of accommodation in Germany
- Round-trip flight reservation or travel itinerary
- Travel health insurance
- Proof of financial means
- Visa fee payment receipt
- Letter of invitation, if applicable
- No-objection certificate (NOC) from an employer or educational institution, where required
Financial proof and insurance
Applicants must show they have enough money to cover their stay in Germany. This can be done by submitting recent bank statements or a sponsorship letter. According to the guidance, applicants should demonstrate access to at least €45 per day for the duration of their stay.
Travel health insurance is also mandatory. The policy must provide a minimum coverage of €30,000 across all Schengen countries.
Employment status determines additional documents
Germany also requires additional documents based on an applicant's employment status.
Employees must submit an employment contract, bank statements for the past six months, approved leave from their employer and income tax documents.
Self-employed applicants need to provide a business licence, company bank statements and income tax returns.
Retired applicants must submit pension statements from the previous six months.
Students are required to provide proof of enrolment and a no-objection letter from their school or university.
Applicants who are unemployed but married to an EU citizen may have to provide proof of their spouse's employment, passport and marriage certificate.
Invitation letters and NOCs
Applicants visiting family or friends in Germany must submit an invitation letter from their host. Those travelling for business events, conferences or seminars need an invitation from the organising company or institution.
Employees must obtain a no-objection certificate from their employer confirming approved leave, while students need a similar letter from their educational institution.
Extra documents for children
Applications for minors require additional documents, including a birth certificate, consent from parents or legal guardians, copies of parents' identity documents and, where applicable, custody orders.
According to Germany visa, the document list is not exhaustive and requirements may differ between German embassies and consulates. Applicants should verify the latest requirements with the embassy or visa application centre before submitting their application.
