Bucharest is set to introduce a new tourist tax this year, charging visitors around £1.70 per night, after the city’s municipal council approved the levy last month. The General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest approved the tax on December 23, though the exact start date has not yet been announced.

Under the plan, each tourist staying overnight in the Romanian capital will pay 10 Romanian Leu per night. The city expects the levy to raise about £2.5 million a year, which officials say will be used to promote Bucharest as a tourist destination.

According to a council document, the objectives of the tax include increasing tourist numbers, encouraging longer stays, boosting tourism revenue, and improving the overall visitor experience through higher investment. The tax will be collected by accommodation providers and online booking platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb.
