NEW DELHI: More than one lakh Indian students are studying in the United States though a number of youth fail to get visas as they are unable to convince embassy officials that their primary purpose of visit is education, a US official said today.

"There are many situations under which students did not manage to convince the consul officers that the study is their primary objective to travel abroad," US Vice-Consul to India Paul A Swider said, adding that although many visas have been issued to Indian students.

"We have much liberal policy in providing visa to students which is pretty evident from nearly 1 lakh students, who were studying there from India," he said at the USIEF-IIE University Fair here.

Scores of students flocked to the fair held by the United States-India Educational Foundation and Institute of International Education to provide students an accurate, comprehensive and current information on various programs offered by US institutions.

Counsellor head at US Education, Renuka Rajarao said representatives from 46 US universities participated in the fair which had drawn registration of over 2,500 students.
