Starting today, students applying for graduate, business, and law programs abroad can take a shorter GRE (Graduate Record Examination) test. The GRE testing time has been nearly halved, now taking less than two hours, a significant reduction from the previous nearly four-hour duration.

The GRE is widely accepted across various graduate and professional programs, including STEM, business, and law. It assesses cognitive skills that form the foundation of success in various fields of study and professions.

This streamlined GRE experience is part of ETS's ongoing commitment to enhance the testing process for students while maintaining the integrity and reliability of GRE scores, which institutions worldwide rely on. Additionally, official GRE scores will now be delivered to test takers in just 8-10 days post-examination, further expediting the application process.

The key changes in the GRE:
  1. Removal of the Analyze an Argument Task: The Analytical Writing section will no longer include the Analyze an Argument task.
  2. Reduced Number of Questions: Both the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections will have a reduced number of questions.
  3. Elimination of the Unscored Section: The unscored section has been removed from the test.
Speaking about these changes, Sachin Jain, Country Manager, ETS India & South Asia, said, "The shorter GRE offers a more streamlined test-taking experience while retaining its status as a valid and reliable measure of graduate-level readiness."

"We are confident that Indian GRE test takers, one of the largest groups globally, will greatly appreciate the improved experience with the shorter GRE when presenting their readiness for graduate programs to admissions professionals worldwide," he added.

The score scales for the GRE will remain consistent, ensuring that graduate programs can easily compare the performance of individuals who took the test before and after September 2023. The shorter GRE test is also section-level adaptive, allowing test takers to answer questions in the order they prefer and make changes as needed.

GRE scores remain valid for five years, providing students with flexibility to explore their graduate and professional school options.

With over 1300 business schools in 94 countries accepting GRE scores for MBA and other professional graduate programs, the GRE solidifies its position as a universal test for pursuing graduate and professional studies across various disciplines.
