The mathematical reasoning section requires a sound knowledge of mathematical concepts and a few strategies to solve the problems. Of these techniques, the most important one is to read carefully. Take enough time to read the questions and what the question asks. Don't rush to solve the question; take a little time to understand the context and what is desired. One effective technique is using working paper to meticulously record calculations and verify solutions, thereby minimizing the risk of errors and ensuring accuracy. Students may also try the elimination technique – try eliminating those obvious-looking incorrect answers from the choices in multiple-choice questions, and then make a selection. By doing this, test takers will have a higher chance of picking the correct answer.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Math requires one to be more aware of the common mistakes that lead to wrong answers. A standard error that can lead to incorrect answers is misinterpreting the question. Also, it is essential to avoid getting stuck on a single problem and allocate sufficient time for each question. Often, test takers spend more time on one question if they get stuck, which leads to reduced time for other questions. Carefully read the wording of every question, searching for clues that could help with the correct response approach. Never disregard relevant details or assumptions that may be implicit in the wording.

Test takers should also refer to College Board resources that provide practice exercises, personalized progress tracking, and customized learning plans to help students prepare for the SAT.
