Canada will soon allow individuals to take the Pearson Test of English (PTE) when applying for economic class immigration pathways.

Beginning 'late 2023', the PTE will be accepted as a Designated language testby the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The Canadian government had given designation-in-principle approval for a new language test last August, but had not revealed further details.

The IRCC currently accepts CELPIP and IELTS General Training as proof of English proficiency for economic class candidates.

Depending on the province you choose to move to, either a French or an English test will be part of your Express Entry application.

You get extra points if you have relevant proficiency in both English and French.

The addition of PTE Essential means there are now five total language tests available to economic class immigration candidates.

Currently, Canada accepts four language tests:
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
  • Test d'évaluation du français (TEF)
  • Test de connaissance du français pour le (TCF)
Barring some exceptions – such as spousal sponsorship and temporary immigration programs like International Experience Canada (IEC) – most Canadian economic immigration programs require proof of language.

Along with the language test, immigration applicants also need to get the minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score set for a given pathway.
