Harvard University has announced an increase in its free tuition threshold from $85,000 to $200,000 in family income, a move that aligns with a broader trend among U.S. colleges and universities to make higher education more accessible. Over the past year, institutions such as the University of Texas system, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Pennsylvania have launched or expanded similar programs.
How free tuition works Universities covering tuition for students from lower-income families use grants and scholarships rather than loans. Each institution sets specific eligibility criteria, often requiring families to meet income thresholds while having assets consistent with that income. Some schools, like the University of Pennsylvania, have revised asset evaluations by excluding the value of a family's primary residence.
Other schools that offer free tuition based on family income Over 100 colleges, including both public universities and private institutions, provide free tuition to students from qualifying families. MIT and the University of Pennsylvania recently raised their thresholds to $200,000, while Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis University now offer free tuition to students from families earning up to $75,000.
Sandy Baum, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, told The New York Times that such financial aid has been available for low-income students for years, but many prospective students remain unaware. "In many cases, it's not about money. It's about a clear message," she said, emphasizing the importance of transparency in financial aid policies.

Public universities are also increasing financial aid opportunities. The University of Texas system now waives tuition for undergraduates from Texas families earning $100,000 or less. Other states, such as New Mexico and Wisconsin, offer tuition-free education for residents under specific income limits. Additionally, many states cover tuition costs for community colleges and certificate programs.
Aid beyond tuition Even for students who do not qualify for full tuition waivers, institutions offer need-based financial aid. Some schools pledge to cover 100% of demonstrated financial need through a mix of grants, scholarships, and work-study programs. Universities such as Stanford provide sliding-scale assistance, ensuring that families with incomes up to $150,000 receive substantial tuition coverage.
Ivy Leagues Harvard first introduced a free tuition program in 2004 for families earning under $40,000. Its latest expansion to the $200,000 threshold includes additional support for students from families earning under $100,000, covering housing and food expenses. Other Ivy League schools also offer free tuition based on family income, with Columbia setting the limit at $150,000 and Princeton at $160,000.

How students can apply Students seeking tuition assistance typically begin by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some universities and states require additional applications or pre-enrollment in specific programs. While many U.S. colleges extend aid to undocumented students, eligibility varies by institution and state.
As universities expand financial aid and simplify tuition policies, more students may be encouraged to apply, making higher education accessible to a wider range of families.
