In 2023, a record 253,355 student visas for international students were denied by consular officials worldwide. Despite this high number, the US Embassy encourages students not to be disheartened. "We encourage students not to focus on denials, as most student visa applicants in India will receive the visa on their first try," US Embassy Spokesperson Chris Elms told TOI's Priyanka Srivastava.

Understanding the common reasons for visa rejections and adequately preparing for the interview can significantly improve an applicant’s chances, he said.
