The rankings evaluate these institutions based on various criteria, including global recognition, research capabilities, teaching resources, and internationalization. The 2024 rankings highlight the significant growth in the number of institutions featured, with 148 of them making their debut appearance.
Peking University secured the top spot for the second consecutive year, while the University of Hong Kong climbed to second place. The National University of Singapore (NUS) wrapped up the top three.

Of particular note is the rise of India, which now boasts the most represented higher education system with 148 universities featured, a significant increase from the previous year. It is followed by Mainland China with 133 universities and Japan with 96. Additionally, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Nepal make their first-ever appearances in the rankings.
A closer analysis revealed a balanced performance trend, with over half of the ranked universities either declining in position, improving, or remaining unchanged. India emerges as a key player in this, contributing the lion's share of the new entries. In contrast, Mainland China sees only seven new additions to its list of ranked institutions.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) maintained its status as the nation's premier institution. Interestingly, the top three rankings at the national level remained consistent with the previous edition of the rankings.
India falls slightly below the regional average in Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation but excels in the Papers per Faculty metric. This demonstrates a high research output and a well-qualified faculty. India's performance in the International Research Network indicator reflects the challenge of balancing domestic and international educational needs.
Indian universities also shine in various key indicators. For instance, Anna University takes the top spot regionally in research productivity, particularly in the Papers per Faculty indicator. India produces a substantial amount of research, with several of its universities ranking among Asia's best in this regard.
Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences also saw a significant improvement, climbing 38 places to secure the 213th position. Chandigarh University follows as the second most improved Indian university, moving up 36 spots from last year.
