The one way a Canadian student visa is different from any other is that it only lets you enter the country, but not stay and begin your classes.

For that, you will need a separate study permit, along with your visa.

Simply put, a Student Visa is an authorization to enter into the country and the Study Permit gives you the authority to stay.


Your Study Permit will have the details about your purpose: what is your reason, why you are here, what course level you are studying, what is the duration, and if there are any restrictions in terms of work.

In most cases, you will not need to apply separately for a student visa.

When your study permit is approved, you’ll also receive a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA), either of which will grant you entry into Canada.
