New Zealand urges international students to apply for visas at least three months before travel

New Zealand has advised prospective international students to apply for student visas at least three months before their planned travel date, citing a rise in applications and longer processing times for some cases.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said it has received around 20% more student visa applications so far in 2026 compared with the same period last year. The agency also reported an increase in applications from countries that require more complex assessment and verification, which can take longer to process.

INZ said students who apply close to their intended study start date may not receive a decision before classes begin. The agency said it does not guarantee processing timeframes and urged applicants to check the latest visa wait times, which are updated weekly.

Students encouraged to submit complete applications

INZ advised students to submit complete applications with all required supporting documents and respond promptly if additional information is requested.

The agency said applicants outside New Zealand who are waiting for final academic results or other study documents may be able to apply using a conditional Offer of Place, allowing visa assessment to begin. However, an unconditional Offer of Place is required before a student visa can be granted.

Education providers and education agents have also been asked to encourage students to apply early and ensure applications are complete before submission.

July intake applicants may need contingency plans

INZ said students planning to begin their studies during the July intake who submitted visa applications in May or June, particularly from countries where applications typically require more extensive verification, should discuss contingency arrangements with their education provider.

The agency said these arrangements could include considering a later intake if a visa is unlikely to be approved before the intended start date.

INZ said it will continue to monitor student visa application volumes and provide further updates where necessary.
