What is the LOTUS Programme and why it matters
The LOTUS Programme, led by Japan Science and Technology Agency, is designed to bring early-career researchers from India to Japan for collaborative research. It focuses on building long-term academic partnerships and strengthening research networks between institutions in both countries.The programme offers fully funded research stays at Japanese universities, giving selected candidates access to advanced research infrastructure and international exposure.
Who can apply and how the process works
The programme is open to Master’s students, PhD scholars and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with Indian institutions. Applicants must be under 40 years of age and cannot apply independently. Instead, applications must be submitted through a Principal Investigator at a Japanese university or research institution.The deadline for applications is June 9, 2026.
Two tracks with different research durations
The programme is divided into two tracks:- LOTUS Basic: Supports short-term research stays of up to 12 months
- LOTUS Aspire: Offers long-term research opportunities of up to 36 months, with a focus on measurable research outcomes
Funding and research focus areas
Selected candidates receive a monthly stipend of about 240,000 yen to cover living expenses. Additional funding is provided for research materials, travel within Japan and collaboration support. Under the Aspire track, total funding can go up to ₹25.6 lakh per year. The programme focuses on emerging and high-impact fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, energy, materials science and quantum technologies.
