The University of Hong Kong has secured the top position in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, released on Tuesday by QS Quacquarelli Symonds. The annual assessment, now in its 17th edition, is the largest so far, featuring 1,529 universities across 25 regional education systems, including 558 new entrants.

Peking University of China ranks second, while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) share the third spot. Hong Kong maintains a strong presence, with five of its institutions placed among Asia’s top 10, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) at sixth and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) making its debut in the top 10 at tenth.

India’s research strength shines

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi remains the country’s top-ranked institution, placing joint 59th in Asia for the fifth consecutive year. It leads a group of seven Indian universities in the top 100, 20 in the top 200, and 66 in the top 500.

India also leads Asia in research productivity, dominating the Papers per Faculty indicator. The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal, ranks first in Asia in this metric. Five Indian universities feature among Asia’s top 10 for research papers per faculty, while 28 are among the top 50, more than double China’s count.

Nineteen Indian universities achieved their highest-ever rankings, including Chandigarh University, BITS Pilani, Shoolini University, and O.P. Jindal Global University.

Additionally, India leads the continent in the Staff with PhD indicator, with 11 institutions among the top 23. Thirty-six Indian universities also saw notable improvements in Employer Reputation, with significant gains reported by IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee.
