New Zealand has set clear rules for international students on how they can change their student visa conditions, including work hours, course details and travel permissions. Students must apply for a “variation of conditions” in specific cases, while some changes require a completely new visa. The guidelines also clarify that visa duration cannot be extended through condition changes.

The rules aim to help students understand what they can and cannot do on their current visa and when they must submit a fresh application.

What are student visa conditions?

Student visas come with conditions that define study, work and travel limits. Students can check these conditions through their eVisa, approval letter or the Visa Verification Service.

If a student wants to change any of these conditions, they must apply for a variation of conditions. However, authorities state, “You cannot apply for a variation of conditions to change the expiry date of your visa.”

Work rules updated
Students can apply to change their visa conditions to include work rights if they meet eligibility requirements. From November 3, 2025, work limits increased from 20 hours to 25 hours per week.

Students whose visas still reflect the older limit can apply to increase their work hours. Authorities state, “If your student visa was granted before 3 November and allows you to work part-time for 20 hours a week, you can apply for a variation of conditions to increase your allowed work hours to 25 hours a week.”

Changing course or study location
Students can request a variation if they want to change their course or study location under the same education provider. However, changing the provider usually requires a new visa unless the change is due to reasons beyond the student’s control.

Authorities state, “If you want to change your education provider, even if your course of study stays the same, you must apply for a new student visa.”

Students must also continue their current course until the visa changes are fully approved. “You must not leave your current course before we fully approve the changes to your visa,” the guidelines say.

When a new visa is required
A new student visa is mandatory in several cases. These include switching to part-time study, changing to a lower-level course, extending stay to complete studies, or remaining in the country after course completion.

Students who want to stay after finishing their course cannot use a variation of conditions. They must apply for another visa category, such as a visitor visa or a post-study work visa.

Application process
The application method depends on the student’s visa type. Some must apply online, while others need to submit a paper form. Students must provide supporting documents, pay the required fee and wait for a decision.

Before approval, authorities check if the student meets visa conditions, has followed existing rules and still intends to study.

Once approved, students receive an updated eVisa, and the new conditions apply only after final approval.
