Germany remains one of the most popular destinations for international students, thanks to its globally ranked universities, low tuition costs at many public institutions and strong post-study opportunities. But before students can begin their academic journey, they must complete the country's student visa process and, later, obtain a residence permit.

The process starts once a student receives admission from a German university, preparatory course or language programme. Most non-EU students require a student visa before travelling to Germany, although citizens of countries such as Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States can enter Germany without a visa and apply directly for a residence permit after arrival.

Online and in-person application routes

Students should first check whether they can submit their application online through Germany's Consular Services Portal. Availability depends on the applicant's country of residence. Those eligible for online applications must create an account, complete the visa form and upload electronic copies of required documents, including their passport and admission letter.

Even after completing the online process, applicants must attend an appointment at a German embassy or consulate to provide biometric information, including fingerprints. They are also required to carry the confirmation code generated during the online application process.

For students applying through the traditional route, the process begins with scheduling an appointment at the relevant German embassy, consulate or visa application centre. Applicants must complete the visa application form, either online through the VIDEX portal or by downloading and filling out a PDF version.

Key documents required for a student visa

One of the most important parts of the application is preparing the required documents. Students must submit a valid passport, passport photographs, a completed application form and proof of admission to a recognised German educational institution.

Accepted admission documents include a university admission letter, admission to a foundation course, a preparatory German language programme or a propaedeutic course.

Applicants must also provide proof of previous education, such as academic transcripts, recognised foreign qualifications or a German university entrance qualification if applicable.

Language proficiency documents are another key requirement. Depending on the programme, students may need to submit certificates such as IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English qualifications, Goethe Institute certificates or ÖSD language certificates.

In addition, students must provide a curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and proof of travel insurance for their initial stay in Germany.

Financial proof and residence permit process

Financial proof is often one of the most closely scrutinised parts of the application. Students must demonstrate that they can support themselves during their studies. This can be done through a scholarship confirmation, a sponsor's formal obligation letter, a declaration from parents or proof of funds in a blocked account.

Current guidelines require students using a blocked account to show at least €11,904 for their stay in Germany.

Applicants should also ensure that any documents not issued in English or German are translated and certified according to embassy requirements.

Receiving a student visa is not the final step. After arriving in Germany, students must register their residential address within two weeks and obtain a registration certificate.

They must then visit the local Foreigners Office, known as the Ausländerbehörde, to apply for a residence permit. While the student visa allows entry into Germany, the residence permit is the document that authorises students to remain in the country for the duration of their studies.

Students are advised to begin the visa process well in advance, as appointment availability and processing times can vary by country and season. Careful preparation of documents and financial records can help avoid delays and ensure a smoother transition to studying in Germany.
