Starting 2023, studying in Germany will cost more. The country is planning to increase the amount for a blocked account required by international students by 8.5%.

According to the German Foreign Office, from 1 January 2023, the presumed annual requirement that must be paid into the blocked account when applying for a visa will amount to €11,208.

A blocked account with sufficient funds is one of the top requirements for international students seeking student visas.


Currently, the required amount for a blocked bank account is €10,332.

The amount that can we withdrawn from the account will also increase to €934 per month, according to the Foreign Office, from the current €861.

The blocked account requirements were last revised upward in 2021, by 0.93%.
