Indian-origin cardiologist re-elected president of GOPIO

An Indian-origin cardiologist was today re-elected as president of the Singapore's Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO).

SINGAPORE: An Indian-origin cardiologist was today re-elected as president of the Singapore's Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin ( GOPIO).

The GOPIO Singapore, a body working for linking the Indian community in the city state with the Indians across the world, will connect Singaporeans of Indian origin and about 500 organisations with some 31 million Indian diaspora across the world, VP Nair said.

"Our efforts will continue to link Singaporeans of Indian origin to the global GOPIO network," he said, adding that the network building areas covers businesses, cultural, educational and health sectors.

GOPIO Singapore also gives bursaries to needy students and links Indian organisations here as well as globally, Nair said.

The organisation is planning a wide range of activities for the coming two-years, including lectures on businesses, social life-style and health matters.

GOPIO Singapore would also continue to host visiting Indian Ministers as well as business leaders at seminars and forums, he added.

Singapore has some 500 organisations set up by the Indian community here based on cultural, religious and ethnic links dating back to their migration in the 19th century.

M Chandramohan, an information technology specialist, was re-elected as secretary of GOPIO Singapore.

GOPIO was inaugurated in March 2002 as part of the Global GOPIO Grouping representing some 31 million Indians living abroad.
