People planning to apply for German citizenship through naturalisation must submit a set of documents to prove their identity, legal residence, financial stability, language skills and integration into German society. While the exact requirements may vary depending on an applicant's circumstances, authorities require several key documents as part of the application process.

Identity and civil status documents

Applicants must provide proof of identity, usually in the form of a valid passport. If a passport cannot be submitted, other identity documents such as a national identity card, driving licence or a travel document for stateless persons may be accepted.

Civil status documents are also required. Depending on an individual's situation, these may include a birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree or adoption order.

Proof of legal residence and accommodation

Applicants must show that they have the right to live in Germany. In most cases, this can be done by submitting an electronic residence permit (eAT) that confirms permanent or long-term residence status. Some temporary residence permits, including those issued to skilled workers or under family reunification, may also qualify for naturalisation.

Applicants must also provide proof of accommodation in Germany, such as a copy of their rental agreement.

Documents to prove five years of residence

German authorities require applicants to show they have lived in Germany for the required residence period. This can be demonstrated through various documents, including:

  • Payslips
  • University enrolment certificates
  • Training course certificates
  • School reports
  • Bank statements showing card transactions in Germany
  • Medical visit records

Proof of financial independence

Applicants must show that they can support themselves and any dependent family members without relying on public assistance. Documents that can be submitted include an employment contract, salary slips or income tax assessment notices.

German language requirement

Applicants must generally prove German language skills at the B1 level. This requirement can be met by submitting one of several recognised documents, including:
  • A certificate from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) confirming completion of a language course
  • A German Test for Immigrants (DTZ) certificate
  • Proof of at least four years of study at a German-speaking school
  • A lower secondary school leaving certificate (Hauptschulabschluss)
  • Proof of completing the 10th grade of secondary school
  • A degree certificate from a German university or university of applied sciences

Knowledge of Germany's legal system and society

Applicants must also demonstrate knowledge of Germany's legal system and society. This requirement can be fulfilled by passing the Naturalisation Test or the "Life in Germany" test taken during an integration course.

Alternatively, applicants who completed their schooling or university education in Germany may use their school-leaving certificate or university degree as proof.

Requirements may differ by individual case

German authorities note that the documents required can vary depending on an applicant's personal circumstances. The local naturalisation authority will inform applicants of the documents needed for their case and may request additional documents if the initial submission is not sufficient.
