The UK government has confirmed that electronic visas, or e-visas, will replace all physical visa stickers from 2026, with key changes taking effect from January 12. The update marks a significant shift in how foreign nationals prove their immigration status in the UK.

From January 12, most people granted a UK visit visa, along with some other visa categories, will be informed that they will receive an e-visa alongside a visa sticker. At the same time, most individuals holding a valid visa sticker issued before this date will also be able to access their digital immigration status through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.

UKVI said the dual system is part of a phased transition to a fully digital immigration framework. The government added that not all visa holders currently need an e-visa and has published guidance outlining which categories are excluded at this stage.

Later in 2026, the UK will stop issuing visa stickers entirely. From that point, all successful visa applicants will receive only an e-visa, with immigration permission recorded digitally rather than endorsed in a passport.
