The UK government has announced proposals to increase certain immigration fees, including the cost to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS), among others. The cost of a COS, which is required to be paid by employers who sponsor foreign nationals under the Skilled Worker Route, is expected to more than double from £ 239 to £ 525, says a Fragomen report.
The proposals also include additional fee increases related to the cost of applying for UK citizenship.
The proposals are now awaiting approval by the UK Parliament, among other legal processes that will have to occur before the proposals enter into effect. As such, there is no definitive date by which the fee increases will go into effect.
Due to the significant jump in cost of the COS, sponsors will now need to reassess their immigration budgets in order to ensure they are prepared to sponsor foreign nationals.
UK immigration fees are already among the highest globally, and the proposed increases will significantly raise the cost of hiring foreign nationals. This could have far-reaching implications, potentially making it more difficult for businesses to recruit international talent. Additionally, the increased costs could affect the strategies and priorities within immigration programs, as both employers and applicants may reconsider their options in light of the financial burden.
The government has said that the fees should raise an additional £269 million in revenue and help it achieve its aim of reducing the cost to taxpayers of running the immigration system.
The fee increases come at the same time as the recent confirmation that employers are now required to pay Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) fees, which cannot be reimbursed by the foreign nationals they sponsor. This has already added significant financial strain for some employers.
