Immigration New Zealand has announced that applications for family visas linked to temporary visa holders will move to its enhanced online system from June 1, 2026. The agency said the shift is part of a broader programme to streamline visa processing and improve user experience.
The move will allow applicants for selected family-related visas to submit their applications through the upgraded Immigration Online platform. These include student, work and visitor visa categories linked to partners and children of temporary visa holders.
Shift to upgraded online system
Immigration New Zealand said the transition is part of its “Our Future Services” programme, aimed at modernising immigration processes. The agency said it has already moved several visa categories to the platform, including international student visas, visitor visas, accredited employer work visas and permanent resident visas. The agency said, “We are aiming to deliver a simpler, faster and more user-friendly visa application process to reduce waiting times, provide clear communication on application status, and increase self-service capabilities so everyone feels more informed and better supported.”
From June 1, new applications under the specified family visa categories will be automatically directed to the enhanced system. Applications already submitted through the older system will continue to be processed without changes.
What changes for applicants
Applicants with draft submissions in the existing system can either complete and submit them or start a new application on the upgraded platform. Immigration New Zealand said it will provide further updates before the transition and inform applicants about any deadlines for completing draft applications. The agency also indicated it may review the use of paper-based applications for these visa categories as part of the transition.
New features and processing improvements
The upgraded system introduces a redesigned application process with clearer instructions and guidance. Immigration New Zealand said the new platform uses dynamic forms that adjust questions based on an applicant’s situation, helping ensure all required information is submitted at the outset. The system will also include Identity Document Reader functionality, which captures passport details automatically to reduce data entry errors. The agency said incomplete applications often delay processing, and the updated system aims to minimise such delays.
The agency added that more visa categories will be moved to the enhanced platform in phases as part of the ongoing programme.
