New Zealand processed over 1 million visa applications in 2025, marking a record year for the country’s immigration system, according to Immigration New Zealand. The agency handled applications for visitors, workers, students, and permanent residents while also resettling more than 1,500 refugees.

Faster Processing for Key Visas

INZ reported significant improvements in processing times. Visitor visas averaged five working days, down from seven in 2024. International student visas were processed in 12 days on average, compared with 18 days the previous year. Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applications now take 12 working days on average, nearly halving the 23-day timeline of 2024.

New Visa Categories and Workforce Support

Five new visa categories were introduced, including the Active Investor Visa, Business Investor Visa, Parent Boost Visitor Visa, Global Workforce Seasonal Visa, and Peak Seasonal Visa.

These initiatives aim to support businesses, seasonal workers, and investors while addressing labor and skill needs across the country.

Students and Seasonal Workers

Student visas numbered over 97,000 with 91% approved, while Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) applications exceeded 18,000 with 99% approved. Working holiday visas also remained popular, with 98% approval among 45,000 applications.

Employers and Border Highlights

INZ facilitated more than 13.4 million border movements in 2025. Over 17,500 employers were newly accredited or renewed accreditation under the AEWV program, raising the total to more than 27,000. Nearly 2,500 post-accreditation checks were completed, and 43,000 AEWV applications were decided, with a 91% approval rate.

INZ prosecuted 16 people from 11 investigations and issued 151 infringement notices totalling NZ$520,000 for immigration violations. These measures helped maintain border integrity while supporting lawful immigration.

Digital Transformation

Student visa applications were moved onto an enhanced online system under the “Our Future Services” programme, allowing real-time updates and faster decisions. This step is part of INZ’s broader effort to make the immigration system simpler, more efficient, and more responsive to applicants.

INZ said it plans to build on these achievements in 2026, continuing to provide timely decisions while supporting New Zealand’s economy, workforce, and international commitments.
