The number of Indians getting arrested while crossing the US border unlawfully has reportedly risen five-fold in the past years. As per UCBP data, in 2019-20, 19,883 Indians were apprehended. In 2020-21, 30,662 Indians were arrested while in 2021-22 this number was 63,927, according to the data.

Of the 96,917 Indians caught between October 2022 and September 2023, 30,010 were caught on the Canadian border and 41,770 at the frontier with Mexico.

Those apprehended are categorized into four groups: Accompanied Minors (AM), Individuals in a Family Unit (FMUA), Single Adults, and Unaccompanied Children (UC).

The most substantial category consists of single adults. In the fiscal year 2023, 84,000 Indian adults entered the US illegally, with 730 unaccompanied minors among the detained individuals.

The fiscal year for the US federal government spans from October 1 to September 30. Senator James Lankford highlighted on Thursday that these individuals often take multiple flights, including layovers in countries like France, to reach Mexico, the nearest airport. Subsequently, they utilize buses arranged by cartels to reach the border for their final journey.

Lankford emphasized that many migrants, including 45,000 from India this year, are coached by criminal cartels in Mexico on what to say and where to go to manipulate the asylum process and gain entry into the country while awaiting an asylum hearing.

He reiterated the need for addressing the flaws in America's asylum system, pointing out that the international standards for asylum and refugee status are the same. According to Lankford, individuals seeking asylum should go to the nearest safe place and request asylum, but this practice is not consistently followed in the United States.
