Malaysia becomes the latest country to issue digital nomad visas for those who want to work remotely without taking leave from work. Currently, countries like Estonia, Malta, Bahamas, Cyprus, and Thailand offer digital nomad visas, following the covid pandemic.

What is a digital nomad visa, you ask?
A digital nomad visa allows a person to work remotely in a foreign country. These visas are usually short term and are not a gateway to permanent citizenship. This visa provides individuals an excellent opportunity to work and travel around the world.

However, in order to issue a digital nomad visa, tax and other regulatory issues, both for the employer and the individual need to be borne in mind, before you make the move to any exotic location.

Digital Nomad Visa Documents Required
You need the following documents for your digital visa application:

  • Digital nomad visa application form.
  • Your passport.

  • Proof of health insurance.
  • Proof of financial income (its source, the amount, etc.).

The Malaysian government has begun to accept online applications for the new digital nomad pass from 1st October. The visa has been termed the 'DE Rantau Nomad Pass Program'. Individuals with an annual income of over $24,000 can apply for this visa and stay in Malaysia with their dependents for a period of up to 3 to 12 months initially, with the option to extend it for another year.

This is a multiple-entry programe, unlike a tourist visa which is only meant for a single entry scheme with a validity of three months. The applicant has to submit proof of work or employment and pay the requisite fees.
