The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the method used to rank candidates in Canada's Express Entry pool. This points-based system evaluates various factors to determine eligibility for invitation rounds, where top-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence.

The type of round, the number of candidates to be invited, and the highest-ranking eligible candidates are identified in each round. These rounds include:

General Rounds of Invitations: In these rounds, top-ranking candidates across the pool who qualify for one of the three programs managed through Express Entry are invited.
Program-Specific Rounds of Invitations: These rounds focus on candidates eligible for a specific Express Entry program, such as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). For instance, a round specifically for PNP will invite only those eligible for that program.
Category-Based Rounds of Invitations: Here, the Minister sets a category to address specific economic goals, and candidates who meet this category's criteria are invited.

Candidates must be eligible for at least one of the three Express Entry programs to be placed in the pool. Category-based rounds complement general and program-specific rounds by targeting candidates who can meet specific economic needs.

Candidates with a provincial or territorial nomination will continue to receive invitations in general and PNP-specific rounds, as they have demonstrated the skills, education, and work experience needed to contribute to the regional economy.

Each invitation round is governed by a set of instructions available online at the time of the round. These instructions include the date and time of the round, the number of candidates to be invited, the round type (general, program-specific, or category-based), and specific eligibility criteria.

Candidates should regularly check their CRS score and use the posted instructions to gauge their likelihood of receiving an invitation in upcoming rounds.
