Canada to process all pending visa applications by end of the year

With the new university term starting soon, Canada has been prioritising student visas. Currently, more than 230,000 students from India enrolled in post-secondary institutions in Canada.

Canada is hoping to get through its massive visa backlog of 2.7 million applications by the end of the year. In 2022, there has been a 55% surge in visa applications compared to 2019, and that has added to the backlog.

Despite the unprecedented surge, Canada hopes to get back to normal processing times by end of 2022, the country’s high commissioner to India, Cameron MacKay has said.

With the new university term starting soon, Canada has been prioritising student visas. Currently, more than 230,000 students from India enrolled in post-secondary institutions in Canada.


Indians are numero uno applicants in every category of Canadian visas, including student, tourist and business, as well as work permits and permanent residence applications. “We process roughly 10,000 visas a week for Indian nationals and that is not fast enough,” he said.
