Australia’s citizenship test is a key step for those seeking to become Australian citizens. The test is introduced to confirm an applicant’s knowledge of the country’s history, values, and civic responsibilities. It is usually required for applicants aged 18 to 59, while those under 18, over 60, or with certain physical or mental conditions may follow alternate procedures.

Who can take the test and interview requirements

Applicants who do not take the test may be called for an interview instead. “If we need to interview you, we will contact you with the details,” the Department of Home Affairs states. The interview helps officials verify identity and ensure applicants understand the nature of their application. Family members or support persons can attend for assistance, and interpreters can be arranged if needed.

How to prepare and what to bring

Preparation for the citizenship test involves studying the official booklet, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, available in English and several community languages. The government also provides podcasts and interactive AMEPOnline modules to help learners engage with the material. Those seeking to improve English skills can enroll in the general AMEP Program for additional support.

Applicants must bring a valid photo ID, such as an Australian driver licence, passport, or proof of age card, to their interview or test. Certified copies or electronic images are not accepted. After completing the process, applicants are informed of the outcome. If approved, they may be invited to a citizenship ceremony or receive their certificate by registered post.

The Department of Home Affairs advises that wait times for ceremonies can vary and encourages applicants to check official updates to stay informed. The test and interview ensure new citizens understand both their rights and responsibilities in Australia.
