According to data from FlightAware, more than 5,300 flights within, into or out of the United States were cancelled at the start of the week. The disruption is comparable to previous severe winter storms in the region.
The storm is expected to bring up to 30 inches of snow in some areas, according to the National Weather Service. Authorities said the heaviest snowfall is forecast through Sunday night and into Monday morning, making travel difficult.
Several airports reported major cancellations. LaGuardia Airport cancelled 98% of flights, while John F. Kennedy International Airport suspended 88% of operations. In Boston, Boston Logan International Airport cancelled 93% of scheduled services. Philadelphia International Airport halted 83% of flights.
Airline operator Delta Air Lines said it expected to suspend operations at key New York and Boston airports into Tuesday and warned of wider delays across the eastern region.
Airport authorities advised passengers to check flight status with airlines before travelling and to avoid unnecessary trips as conditions remain affected.
