The UK has begun rolling out a contactless airport entry system that uses facial recognition instead of requiring passengers to scan their passports at eGates. The rollout started at East Midlands Airport on 6 October 2026, initially for British citizens, and will extend to other eligible travellers and airports by early 2027.
The phased rollout began at East Midlands Airport on October 6, 2026, initially for British citizens. The system is expected to be introduced at all eligible UK airports by early 2027, according to the government announcement.

For Indian travellers visiting family, studying, working or travelling for leisure, the new system could reduce waiting times at immigration once access is extended to their category of passengers. However, the initial rollout is limited to British citizens, and the announcement does not specify when Indian passport holders will become eligible.
How the new UK airport entry system works
Under the contactless system, an eGate automatically takes a photograph of the passenger approaching it. The image is then matched against verified immigration, travel and passport records to confirm the person's identity. If the details match, the gate opens, and the passenger can proceed without placing their passport on the reader. Travellers who require additional verification may be asked to scan their passports or directed to a Border Force officer.Testing showed that the new technology could process passengers up to 25 per cent faster than the existing method of scanning passports at eGates. The contactless technology will be introduced at 13 UK airports where eGates are already in operation. These are Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle and Stansted.
What Indian travellers should know
The contactless eGate system is part of the UK's wider effort to modernise border checks. This includes the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, which allows authorities to assess potential security risks before a traveller departs for the country.Indian nationals must continue to meet the UK's existing visa and entry requirements applicable to their circumstances. The new eGate technology does not, by itself, change visa rules or grant permission to enter the UK. Until the authorities confirm eligibility for Indian passport holders, travellers should follow the current airport immigration procedures and keep their passports available for inspection.
