Cook said he had heard from employees who do not feel comfortable leaving their homes. “I’ve heard from some of you that don’t feel comfortable leaving your homes,” he said. “No one should feel this way. No one.” He stressed that immigration is a critical issue for Apple because the company has team members across the US who are on different types of visas.
The Apple CEO said the company’s success has long depended on talent from around the world. “For as long as I can remember, we have been a smarter, wiser, more innovative company because we’ve attracted the best and brightest from all corners of the world,” he said. Cook added that he would continue to engage with lawmakers on the matter. “I am going to continue to lobby lawmakers on this issue. You have my word on that.”
Cook had earlier addressed immigration in a memo to employees, saying he was “heartbroken” by events in Minneapolis where federal agents killed two people. At the time, he called for calm and said he had discussed the issue with President Donald Trump. “This is a time for deescalation,” he said.
During the meeting, Cook acknowledged criticism from employees who felt his response to the shootings was limited and late. He reiterated his position on human dignity, saying, “Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. No matter where they come from.”
He also responded directly to an employee who said they were worried about being deported and separated from their daughter. Referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, Cook said, “I love you if you’re on DACA.” He said Apple has hundreds of DACA workers and pledged personal support. “I will personally advocate for you,” he said. “I am a huge believer in the program.”
