Reports indicate that Indian nationals have been lured by unregistered agents with lucrative job offers in Laos. The Non-Resident Tamils' Welfare department highlighted in an official release on Sunday that these individuals were illegally transported from Thailand into Laos and then held captive, subjected to harsh and restrictive conditions by criminal syndicates. These conditions included strenuous work, physical, and mental torture.
The government emphasized that Visa on Arrival for Indian nationals in Thailand or Laos is strictly for tourism purposes and does not permit employment. "Please note that those convicted of human trafficking crimes have been sentenced up to 18 years in prison in Laos," the release stated.
The advisory also cautioned people against falling for fraudulent job offers and advised vigilance against employment scams. It stressed the necessity for candidates to verify recruitment agents and companies thoroughly before traveling abroad for work.
Indians should travel with an employment visa and a proper employment contract. Verifying the authenticity of the visa through the Indian Embassy in the destination country and the respective embassies in India is crucial, the government added.
