‘Treated like a criminal’: Indian student crying in handcuffs at US airport sparks outrage
Indian Consulate in New York on Wednesday confirmed that the Indian national detained at the Newark Airport in New Jersey will be deported to once he is fit to travel, sources told ANI.

The man belongs to Haryana and had entered the US illegally without a valid visa and was being deported back to India as per a court order.

The Consulate added that during his transit in Newark, on finding his behaviour not conducive for travel, he was restrained and admitted to a medical facility, sources told ANI.

An Indian student was handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States before he was deported. A video was shared by X user Kunal Jain, an Indian-American social entrepreneur who writes books in Hindi, and recently relocated to India. He tagged the Indian Embassy, as well as external affairs minister S Jaishankar, seeking help for the boy. "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal.

After a social media post claiming that an Indian national was detained at Newark Airport in New Jersey, went viral, India has now formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi, as per ANI sources.

Indian Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details, sources told ANI.

"We have so far have not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination. We continue to follow up on the matter," the sources said.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs, the administration of US President Donald Trump, since assuming power in January, has deported as many as 1,080 Indian nationals from America.
