Spain issued its highest-level red heat alert in three eastern regions on Tuesday as temperatures were forecast to exceed 40°C, according to the country's weather agency AEMET.

The regions of Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia are expected to be among the hardest hit by the latest heatwave sweeping southern Europe. Forecasters said the extreme heat is likely to continue until at least Thursday.

A red alert is the highest warning level and indicates a risk of very serious impacts on people's health and property.
