Scores of Hindu pilgrims from across the world missing in Nepal-Tibet region: Sadhguru

Scores of pilgrims from across the world are among hundreds missing after deadly floods swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru said on Thursday, reported AFP.

Sadhguru, whose real name is Jagdish Vasudev, said 77 pilgrims were at the Nepal-China border immigration office when the flood struck on Wednesday. The pilgrims were part of several Hindu groups organised by his Isha Foundation during a visit to Mount Kailash in Tibet.

He shared a surveillance video showing a wall of mud and debris crashing over the border building on the Chinese side. In an emotional video message from Tibet, Sadhguru said communication lines were down and roads had been blocked, preventing the groups from reaching the affected area.

"Literally, the entire group was there in the building, this is a terrible and extraordinary event. All phones are off, telecommunications are down, roads are blocked, we are unable to go there," he said.

Sadhguru said there was no official information on the number of casualties but that the scale of destruction appeared severe.

"We have no any official information... but looking at the scale of destruction, it looks bad. The same building where we were for the immigration just a week ago, that entire building is washed away, and part of the town is washed away," he added.

The flood was triggered by a glacial collapse that sent water, mud and debris through the valley. The pilgrims had been visiting Mount Kailash, which is sacred to Hindus and Tibetan Buddhists.

The annual pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar is organised by India's foreign ministry in coordination with Chinese authorities. The pilgrimage resumed for Indians in 2025 for the first time since the 2020 India-China border clash.
