Addressing the 'NRI Milni-2026' programme at Amity University in Mohali, the minister said the initiative was aimed at hearing grievances of NRIs and ensuring prompt action by the concerned authorities.
NRIs from Mohali, Rupnagar, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib districts attended the event. Senior officials of the NRI Affairs Department, Punjab Police and district administration also took part in it.
Speaking to reporters, Ravjot Singh said Punjabis living abroad continue to maintain strong ties with their homeland and have contributed significantly to Punjab's global reputation.
He said the department received 26,828 complaints between January 2022 and May 2026, of which 25,870 have been disposed of.
During the same period, 1,187 FIRs were registered and 1,451 accused were arrested.
The minister said most complaints relate to property disputes, illegal occupation of land, document-related irregularities and matrimonial issues.
Around 5,000 to 6,000 complaints are received every year, many of which are settled through mutual agreements or legal procedures, he added.
Ravjot Singh said he is personally monitoring long-pending cases and regularly reviewing them with officials to ensure early resolution.
Responding to a query on cases involving contract marriages and the use of forged documents to obtain work permits or permanent residency abroad, particularly in Canada, the minister termed the issue serious and of national importance.
He said that while the legal framework for such matters falls under the jurisdiction of Parliament, the Punjab government will strongly take up the issue with the Centre and seek a permanent solution.
The minister reiterated that the state government remains committed to resolving NRI-related issues, especially property disputes, illegal encroachments and matrimonial cases, in an effective and transparent manner.
