In a written reply, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said 3,414 Indians were deported through Washington till mid-December 2025. The data was shared in response to a question by Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala on deportations, illegal migration routes and safeguards against fraudulent recruitment.
Deportations and consulate-wise data
The tabulated data also listed deportations handled by Indian consulates in the US during 2025. These included New York (47), Atlanta (31), Houston (234), San Francisco (49) and Seattle (31).Singh said the government works closely with the US and other foreign governments on matters related to deportation of Indian citizens. “Such deportations are subject to an unambiguous verification of their Indian nationality,” he said.
Concerns over treatment of deportees
The minister said India remains in constant dialogue with US authorities on ensuring “humane treatment” during deportation operations. “We have registered our concerns with the US authorities, particularly with respect to use of restraints on the deportees, especially women and children,” Singh said.Action against illegal agents
Based on testimonies of returning deportees, Singh said central and state governments, along with law enforcement agencies, have registered several cases. Investigations and action are underway against illegal recruitment agents, criminal facilitators and human trafficking syndicates involved in such networks.Measures to curb illegal migration
Singh said the government gives priority to the safety and well-being of Indians seeking work abroad. Under the Emigration Act, 1983, no person or agency can function as a recruiting agent without a valid licence issued by the Protector General of Emigrants.“Mandatory registration of RA is aimed to reduce fraud and exploitation of prospective Indian emigrants proceeding for employment abroad,” he said. He added that Emigration Clearance is mandatory for Emigration Check Required passport holders travelling to 19 notified countries.
The ministry also issues advisories through the eMigrate portal and social media on the risks of fake job rackets. Till December 2025, “a total of 3,505 unregistered agents in country have been notified on the eMigrate portal,” Singh said.
