Norway is using an insult by US President Donald Trump to draw attention to its scenic roadside restrooms. The country's official travel website is promoting facilities located along its fjords, coastline and mountain routes as tourist attractions.

The website, Visit Norway, has featured a collection of public restrooms along its National Tourist Routes under the heading, “Are these the world’s best sh-- houses?”

It further describes the facilities as “worth a visit” and features photographs of restrooms at locations including the Helgeland coast in northern Norway and the mountains overlooking the Aurlandsfjord in the south.

The campaign has received around 80,000 individual views from 173 countries, according to Bloomberg News. Innovation Norway, the state-backed organisation that operates the website, said it had received responses from people in countries including South Korea, Germany and Canada.

The tourism campaign follows Trump's recent criticism of Norway, in which he reportedly called the country a “s--house”. His remarks were linked to his repeated complaints about not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump has previously campaigned for the award and recently renewed his criticism over being overlooked. At a campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday, he told supporters that he should have received the prize after claiming to have “settled eight wars and I’ve got two more coming”.

Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded to the remarks the following day. The country's tourism body, however, used the controversy to promote its tourist routes.

Anne-Signe Fagereng of Visit Norway said the remarks gave the tourism body an opportunity to highlight the country's public facilities along its scenic routes.

“Trump’s remarks certainly weren’t positive — he used the term ‘sh--houses’ — but we actually have fantastic toilets,” she said, as cited by Bloomberg News.

She added that the restrooms are part of Norway's National Tourist Routes, which showcase scenic locations across the country.
