The Lufthansa Group has announced a marginal reduction in its summer flight schedule, citing rising fuel costs and geopolitical uncertainty. The airline said capacity will be cut by less than one percent in available seat kilometres, with changes focused on route optimisation across its European hubs.

The decision follows a sharp rise in global oil prices linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has increased operating costs for airlines worldwide.

Capacity cuts and network rebalancing

Lufthansa said it will cancel unprofitable routes, particularly from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs, while expanding selected services in Zurich, Vienna and Brussels. The airline described the move as part of a broader network rebalancing strategy aimed at improving efficiency.

Fuel costs, which account for up to one-third of airline operating expenses, have risen sharply as Brent crude prices crossed $100 per barrel. Disruptions to key supply routes have added pressure on carriers to adjust capacity and pricing.

The airline stated that the optimisation exercise is designed to maintain efficiency amid “short-term changes and market fluctuations,” and added that it retains flexibility to cancel routes or redeploy aircraft based on demand and cost conditions.

Industry-wide impact and outlook

Airlines across Europe and other regions have announced similar measures, including capacity cuts, retirement of older aircraft, and route rationalisation. Lufthansa has also scaled back flights and phased out less efficient aircraft to manage fuel consumption.

The crisis has affected global oil supply chains, especially through the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to higher fuel prices.

Despite these challenges, Lufthansa said travel demand remains strong for the summer season. However, it stated that higher ticket prices due to fuel costs could affect growth. The airline added that it will continue to monitor the situation and adjust its network based on market conditions.
