Indian student's death in Canada: Our consulate is providing all assistance to victim's family, says MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep condolences after the death of an Indian student in Canada, saying officials are in touch with the student’s family and local authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We are in constant touch with his family, and this is an extremely unfortunate incident. We extend our deepest condolences and are coordinating with local authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the death. Our consulate is providing all possible assistance to the family,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responding to a media query on Indian student who recently died in Canada.

The student, identified as 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi, was studying near the University of Toronto campus. Canadian police said he was found with gunshot injuries close to the university area earlier this week. Emergency services responded after receiving reports from the location, but the student could not be saved.


Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the sequence of events that led to the shooting. The University of Toronto issued safety advisories to students following the incident, asking them to avoid the area while police carried out checks.

Indian officials in Canada are coordinating with local authorities and providing support to the family.

The MEA said it will continue to follow the matter closely and extend all possible assistance to the family of the deceased.
