Indian seafarer killed in Black Sea attack on commercial vessel; MEA condemns strike

New Delhi: One Indian national was killed after the commercial vessel MV OMORFI came under attack while transiting the Black Sea in reported Russian territorial waters on July 18, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. Two other Indian crew members on board are safe.

The vessel was carrying 10 crew members, including three Indians, when it was attacked.

"As per available information, one Indian national tragically lost his life in the attack. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased. The other two Indian nationals on board are reported to be safe," the MEA said in a post on X.

The ministry said the Indian Embassy in Russia has reached out to the relevant authorities and is extending all possible assistance to the affected family.

"On receiving this information, our Mission in Russia has reached out to the relevant authorities and is making efforts to extend all possible assistance to the affected family," it said.

India also condemned the attack, saying such incidents threaten civilian lives and global maritime trade.

"India unequivocally condemns such attacks targeting commercial shipping and placing the lives of innocent civilian crew members at risk. It is a matter of serious concern that the freedom of navigation and international commerce is facing increasing threats," the MEA said.

Calling for adherence to international obligations, the ministry urged all parties to safeguard maritime navigation and ensure the uninterrupted flow of global commerce.

"India calls upon all concerned parties to uphold international obligations to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation and uninterrupted flow of global commerce," the statement said.
